Warning: The following article contains spoilers from the season finale of Part 2 of “You” Season 4. Proceed with caution.
Unsurprisingly, Joe Goldberg is responsible for the murders in the latest installment of Netflix’s “You.” While some viewers may have held onto the hope that the “Eat the Rich” killer targeting London’s elite was someone other than the show’s protagonist, the new episodes released on Thursday confirmed that it was indeed Penn Badgley’s character all along.
However, Joe’s actions can be attributed to a fugue state or multiple personality disorder, and he manages to evade justice once again. In fact, his actions escalate beyond just the murders.
The Season 4 “You” finale provided many answers while also leaving some characters dead, behind bars, or on the lam. Here are some important details and predictions for a potential fifth season.
The Major Twist In ‘You’ Season 4 Is…
Throughout most of Season 4, it seems like Joe is engaged in a dangerous game of cat and mouse with London mayoral candidate Rhys. However, it’s revealed that this was all in Joe’s mind. Rhys is a real person, but Joe has never actually interacted with him. Unbeknownst to him, Joe is responsible for the deaths of Malcolm, Simon, and Gemma. Even worse, he has kidnapped Marienne, the object of his obsession, and is keeping her captive in a glass cage. In Episode 7, when Joe kills the real Rhys, he finally comes to the shocking realization of what he’s done.
Joe attempts to rectify the issues caused by his equally violent alter ego. One of these issues involves Marienne, whom his clever student Nadia (Amy-Leigh Hickman) has already found. Together, Marienne and Nadia come up with a plan to fake Marienne’s death and remove her from Joe’s danger zone permanently.
Following the murder of Kate’s father (played by Greg Kinnear), Joe attempts suicide by jumping off a bridge but is rescued from the water. In the hospital, Kate learns about Joe’s dark past and decides to take matters into her own hands. Despite knowing that Joe is a murderer, Kate chooses to help him reform. With the help of carefully crafted media coverage, Kate manages to rehabilitate Joe’s image, and the two become a couple. Joe is even able to start using his real name again, thanks to Kate’s support.
What all of this means for a potential Season 5 of “You”
By the conclusion of Season 4, Joe has returned to his hometown of New York and appears to have settled down in a stable relationship. He’s no longer haunted by his past and seems content with his current situation. But will this newfound happiness last for the notorious killer?
However, it’s unlikely that Joe Goldberg’s newfound happiness will last. Despite his wealthy wife Love Quinn in the past, his current partner Kate is even more influential and powerful, having essentially brought him back from the brink of death. If their relationship takes a turn for the worse, the consequences could be catastrophic for Joe. With the potential for danger lurking around every corner, it’s possible that a fifth season of ‘You’ could also serve as a satisfying conclusion to the series.
